Radical Prunings

Hey Wormies,
Let's start the discussion on the 21st to keep in line with our pattern from earlier books. This allows those of us who read the book a bit ago to refresh ourselves of the plot turns.

And we will answer no questions about lawn care.

Okay, I found this book to be hilarious!!! Especially as I am quite into gardening, and some of the questions "sent in" early on were things that I either knew or wanted to know. And she would spew a whole bunch of info in general, and not answer them!!

The lawn care questions - LOL!!!!

The whole adding details of her personal life, and the personal lives of everyone else around her!

And the next door neighbour, whom she disses so well, even though he always writes in with a pseudonym. . . or was it really him at all? How to offend your readers for sure!

These are my first impressions. And many, many thanks again to Hashbrown and AJWP for sending me the book (what was up with that? Damn Chapters!)

I also found the book to be quite funny. Not laugh out loud, but smiling amusingly as I read it. I knew it would be a good read from the beginning when she is talking about having an open house in her garden and who were the visitors.

The way the book went on and on about everything but the questions from the readers was quite funny. I do not know that she ever answered a question. The interplay between the characters was quite well done and it had som unexpected turns, as well as expected ones.

The lawn care questions and answers were really so very funny. When she found all the lawn care letters in her chimmney, I laughed.

I enjoyed the secondary characters so much as well as the main character. They were all sort of two diminsional but that is ok in a book like this.

I think it was a good summer read. I hope others liked it too. I hope we can keep the book club going. I have enjoyed it, beings it is my first. And you never want your first to end.

I'm loving the book club. And I bet we will be more on track again in the fall - with everyone away for different times, and the weather so nice, a lot of blogging has slowed down.

One of my fave parts about the book was the way Mertensia just announced Miss Vong's pregnancy. And she wasn't! Too funny (well, if it had been real, I'm sure Miss Vong wouldn't have found it so funny!)

I so suck. It's been a crazy month and I couldn't find the book at the library and I dropped the ball. Forgive me?
I am going to look for it to read at a later date cause it sounds like a scream. And now I actually got most of my house unpacked and in a few weeks school starts again and hopefully (!) my mom has found a buyer and will be here and I'll be able to read again. I hope!

PK - yay on the unpacking! And now I don't feel so bad that I couldn't find it - apparently it doesn't exist in Canada. Want me to mail you my copy from Hashbrown & AJWP?

Ooh PK, it was v. funny. I hear you about the packing, and the book will always be there if you decide you want a light read.

I really liked Miss Mertensia's actual gardening advice, and the way she dismissed her readers' questions. I learned a lot about gardening, and I thought the book was a hoot. I wouldn't have read it on my own, but I'm so glad I read it with the book club!

One critisizm, lord i know that word is spelled wrong but hell if I know how to spell it right. Anyway, one thing I did not like was the cover. IF I saw it in the library or bookstore, the cover would have put me off and I never would have given it a second look. Funny how covers can make or break a book.
